Hydrological and hydraulic study for flood protection

Project of diversion of the Affluent of Oued El Hma, Delegation of Morneg, Governorate of Ben Arous, for the company “Carthage Cement“.

Within the framework of a project to conduct a hydrological and hydraulic study following the diversion of the Affluent d’Oued El Hma towards Oued El Adem and in order to protect the area upstream of the Carthage Cement plant, the company “Carthage Cement“has entrusted us with conducting a hydrological and hydraulic study in the area upstream of the cement plant located in Jebel Ressas, Morneg delegation, Ben Arous governorate, to verify and evaluate the performance of existing structures, which were executed as part of the Affluent d’Oued El Hma diversion project, and propose other improvements to protect the area from runoff from rainfall coming from Jebel Ressas.

To conduct the flood protection study of the area upstream of the “Carthage Cement” cement plant, we have adopted a well-structured methodology, which can be summarized as follows:

  • Assessment of the current situation regarding flooding and evaluation of the performance of existing structures.
  • Examination and evaluation of flood protection studies that have already been established.
  • Identification of all hydrological units that have a negative impact on urban areas and existing infrastructure.
  • Evaluation of the catchment area inputs and their consequences on urban areas for different return periods (5, 10, 20, 50 and 100) and taking into account exceptional rainfall and the impact of climate change in Tunisia.
  • Use of IDF curves (INM, 2023), presenting rainfall data, temperatures etc. for the area.
  • Development of a general presentation of the different possible development variants with their comparative studies and a justification of the recommended solution.
  • Proposal of further developments to improve the response of existing flood defences during flood periods .
